Jewish Youth Climate Movement (JYCM)

Empowering Jewish teens to organize for climate justice.
Founded by Hazon in 2019, the Jewish Youth Climate Movement (JYCM) is dedicated to mitigating climate change by empowering teens, mobilizing communities and taking action. Knowing that youth are the future, Hazon made a strategic decision to support efforts of highly motivated teens who designed and launched JYCM, centering the visions of teen leaders to meaningfully effect change. Many teens involved with JYCM have never been part of organized Jewish youth groups, schools, or camps.
JYCM is comprised of three parts: The Founding Teen National Leadership Board with 23 teen leaders, local activist chapters known as Kvutzot—which are open to all self-identified Jewish teens, including those who are not affiliated with other Jewish institutions—and the Jewish Environmental Education Certification Program. These platforms offer Jewish youth opportunities to organize for climate solutions, commit to creating greater sustainability practices individually and collectively, and create a culture of caring for the environment within their Jewish communities. In the words of one teen:
“Before I was involved with JYCM I didn’t have the skills or confidence to get up and speak in front of hundreds of people, lead a meeting properly, or connect with organizations and meet with their founders. In the short time that JYCM has been active, I have had the chance to speak in front of over 800 people, lead meetings within JYCM, and meet with amazing founders of organizations working to better the world. I know that without JYCM I would not have the opportunities that I have had in my high school years.”
Teens are learning how to develop their skills in public speaking, storytelling, advocacy and journalism to advance the climate justice agenda. Ultimately, JYCM educates and inspires young Jewish leaders, integrating them into positions of leadership and power, and motivating them to meaningfully effect change in their communities.
