New Synagogue Project
A new model for prayer, ritual, and Jewish community
For many Jews, the traditional synagogue experience feels outdated, stale, or no longer resonant. The New Synagogue Project is seeking to change that. In 2018, The New Synagogue Project was founded in Washington, D.C. to be spiritually vibrant, radically inclusive, and anchored in a vision for justice, equity, and liberation in the world.
The New Synagogue Project began and continues to be built by an extremely diverse segment of the Jewish community: families with kids; couples and single people; queer and trans people; disabled and chronically ill people; D/deaf and hard of hearing folks; interfaith families; Jews of Color and white Jews; religious, secular, and atheist Jews; and anyone interested in exploring and experiencing Jewish life.
Its members are activists, organizers, artists, and healers involved in movements for racial and economic justice in the U.S. and throughout the world.
Together, The New Synagogue Project is innovating Jewish ritual and liturgy, designing prayer experiences that draw on ancient Jewish traditions, while speaking to the political crises of our current time and our spiritual need to work toward, and embody, collective liberation. Through joyous song, heartfelt prayer, transformative ritual, arts, culture, and learning, The New Synagogue Project is providing spiritual sustenance and grounding in a living, breathing Jewish tradition.
